Chef Klaus’ Bier Stube

Frankfort, IL  60423-1347

How can I best describe this truly great dining experience without having to resort to the usual cliché expressions like “exquisite little out of the way gem”.  Words simply fail me here.  As the name would imply, Chef Klaus’ specializes in authentic German/Bavarian cuisine. I watch dining trends very carefully and no, German food is not hip or trendy like Sushi or the growing interest in the “raw foods” movement.  However, I beg you not to pass up the opportunity for a truly lovely dining experience. Do not be put off by the fact that the décor is like something out Hansel & Gretel and the wait staff is attired in either a Dirndl or Lederhosen. Okay, so the average customer may be swiftly approaching retirement—so what?  All that means is the regulars have been around long enough to know great food. And great food is what this restaurant serves!!

My husband and I were in Frankfort to meet with one of our contractors.  The meeting ran a little long so my husband inquired where we could get a decent meal in the immediate area.  Our contractor recommended Chef Klaus’ and gladly gave us directions. Now my husband has had little experience with German food and I was fearful that he might not be able to find something familiar that he could enjoy.  Fortunately, they also serve prime cuts of aged beef and seafood, so my husband played it safe by ordering the New York Strip Steak (which by the way was so tender it could almost be cut with your fork). I went full-blown German the whole way. I had the Bavarian Pot Roast, which was also fork tender.

Your meal starts out with a complementary plate of pretzel bread, carrot and celery sticks, sweet red onion, cream cheese and a generous helping of liverwurst. Also included is a basket of assorted rye and cranberry breads along with homemade cinnamon and blue cheese butters. Dinners come with either soup or salad and two sides. If you can stop yourself before you are completely stuffed, there is also a heavenly assortment of deserts. The restaurant has a full bar with a wide variety of popular cocktails, wines and of course, beer. For a complete menu go to www.chefklausbierstube.com .

On a final note, I cannot give a glowing review to any restaurant that does not provide me with excellent service. Our server “Mickey” was the best! She was cheerful, helpful and attentive. She is everything wait staff should aspire to be.   "Out of five forks, I give Chef Klaus FIVE!"
